Swimming Pool Lighting

Several Options are shown for Swimming Pool Lighting – Wall Mounted Floodlights, direct or indirect and High Bay Pendants.

Floodlights

Floodlights can be pointed directly at the Water or alternatively can be used indirectly by bouncing the light of the Ceiling.  With a bright ceiling, it is possible to use floodlights directed at the ceiling to illuminate the pool.  This can require extra Lighting, depending on Reflectances and distances involved, but it can lead to reduced glare and better uniformity of light levels.   With a low height ceiling, it may not be possible to illuminate the centre of a Pool from the sides with direct lighting, but indirect lighting using the Ceiling as reflector may be possible.   The Photo of this Pool shows this indirect lighting with Floodlights pointed upwards at the Ceiling.

Sports Pitch Floodlighting

If the ceiling is darker or obstructed, but is high enough, then wall mounted floodlights can be pointed towards the centre of the Pool.  Smaller Floodlights and more of them may be required to avoid causing glare, which may result from the use of a few, more powerful Floodlights.  The Photo of New Ross Sports Centre shows Asymmetric Floodlights on the Wall directed towards the centre of the Pool.

The floodlight itself needs to be designed for outdoor usage and for higher ambient temperatures which are common in swimming pools.  Other options with this floodlight include symmetric or asymmetric light output. Asymmetric is supplied in this project as light was directed to the centre of the ceiling.

 LED HighBays

The Photo shows Highbay lighting for the University of Limerick with High Bay lighting.  This photo shows older Metal Halide HighBays (now obsolete), but these were replaced in 2022 with VeeLite LED Highbays, in the same locations and providing the same light levels.  The Energy load has been reduced significantly.

This swimming pool lighting was initially located so the HighBays could be accessed for relamping easily. With no relamping and long lifetimes with the LED Highbays, this is no longer as relevant, but is still an advantage, especially for initial installation of the new fittings, and because the odd Driver failure would not be unusual.   The outer rows can be accessed from the sides and the central rows can be accessed from the overhead gangway. The same luminaires were used for the large adjoining sports hall lighting project which includes basketball and tennis courts, a sprint track and a jogging track.
